Pre-Algebra Thursday 09-25-08 Chapter 2: Solving One-Step Equations and Inequalities Lesson Title Chapter 2.4 Variables and Equations Pt.1- Classifying Types of Equations Pt.2- Checking Equations Using Substitution CA Standards: Algebra Functions 1.1 -Write an Equation Algebra Functions 1.4- Use algebraic terms- equation, open sentence, solution Objectives: To classify types of equations To check equations using substitution

Background Info. for the Lesson 1. An equation can be always true, 3 + 1 = 4 or 2. An equation can always be false 4 – 3 = 9 or 3. An equation can be open, x + 3 = 7 The equation x + 5 = 8 is an open sentence. When x has a value of 3, then the equation is true… when x has a value of 1, the equation is false. You solve the equation when you find the value for x that makes the equation true… that value is called the solution

Prior Knowledge Connection In Lesson 2.3 you learned to simplify variable expressions. In this lesson, you will use those skills as you write and solve equations. Looking Ahead In Lesson 2.5 you will solve equations by adding or subtracting. Guided Practice: “Check Understanding” (pg.80) 1-10

Independent Practice Classwork: “Practice and Problem Solving” (pgs.80-81) 12-40 EVENS Homework: 1. “Practice and Problem Solving” (pgs.80-81) 11-39 ODDS - choose 10 2. “Mixed Review” 42-49 All
