EPSRC Mathematical Sciences Staff David Harman – Head of Programme Mark Bambury – Portfolio Manager for Applied Mathematics Programme and Platform Grants, First Grants Caterina Mora – Portfolio Manager for Pure Mathematics Fellowships Vivienne Blackstone – Portfolio Manager for Statistics, OR and Mathematical Physics Education and Training

Responsive Mode

If the restrictions on the First Grant scheme do not allow for the type of project you are considering then you should apply through standard responsive mode. No limits on duration or resource Panels meet 4 times a year Primary criterion is Research Quality The project should be the driver as to which funding route is the most appropriate for your application to EPSRC.

First Grant Scheme

First application to EPSRC (not including fellowships) Within 36 months of first permanent academic post in the UK Within 10 years of completing your PhD Capped at £125k at full economic cost Limited duration of up to two years First Grants are only compared to other first grant applications at panel meetings

Managed Calls Fellowships

Postdoctoral Fellowships Enable talented researchers to establish an independent research career Up to 3 years fellowship Primarily funding salary costs, travel and subsistence Can be used to change academic institution No nationality or age restrictions, but applicants must have no more than 3 yrs postdoctoral experience Proposals are peer reviewed. Suitably supported proposals are then sent to a Sifting panel, where the top applicants are chosen, and invited to interview. Call opens in early summer

Career Acceleration Fellowships Supports talented individuals at an early stage of their research career Up to 5 years of funding for salary, travel, equipment and research staff Expectation that fellows will have established an independent career of international standing by the end of the award. Should not hold, or have held, a permanent academic post, or have received, before the start date of the award, the promise of a permanent academic post. You should have between 3 and 10 years postdoctoral research experience. Next call opens around July 2010, full details of the 2009/2010 call are still available online, and may be of interest.

Leadership Fellowships What are they? Support for future international research leaders Candidate must hold permanent academic post in eligible institution Up to 5 years funding (including PI time, T&S and/or PDRAs/PhDs Process Call for outlines should appear in July 2010 Sifting panel (December 2010?) to invite full proposals Interview panel around May 2011
