SAFE AND SECURE TRANSPORT OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL: A GLOBAL CHALLENGE THAT REQUIRES A GLOBAL SOLUTION Dr. Pil-Soo Hahn Director Division of Radiation, Transport & Waste Safety International Atomic Energy Agency

IAEA Transport Regulations - History At the first IAEA general conference (1957): International transport of radioactive material recognized as vital from the very beginning Harmonization of international regulations for transport was viewed as necessary Harmonization continues to be a key focus of Agency efforts today

IAEA Transport Regulations - Today 2011 Transport Conference: “The Next Fifty Years – Creating a Safe, Secure and Sustainable Framework” Recognized 50 years of safety “Sustainable Framework” for transport continues to be established Challenges remain today in both safety and security

Lessons Learned from Fukushima Lessons related to transport have been evaluated Changes were implemented in the regulations Communication during emergencies and availability of adequate resources are key elements to proper response The Agency will consider the lessons learned in updates to guidance on emergency response to transport accidents

Current Agency Activities Transport Regulations Review/Revision Cycle The Role of Risk in Changes to the Regulations Regulatory Stability Technical Bases of the Regulations Clarity of Regulatory language

Current Agency Activities, cont. Transport Environment TRANSSC Technical Cooperation Projects Denial of Shipment

Future Agency Activities The agency invites your participation in transport related meetings in the coming year Thank you for your attention!
