World War I

Nationalism is the idea that one’s country is not only good, but is also superior to all other countries. Roosevelt said: “Patriotism is to stand by the country… …not necessarily by its public officials.”

While Austria-Hungary’s Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were visiting Serbia they were assassinated.

The secret alliance snow-ball Germany quickly came to Austria-Hungary’s aid and declared war on Serbia. Russia was an ally of Serbia and so declared war on Germany. Soon many countries were involved.

The Allied Powers (Sir Ronald Flips Great Burgers) Serbia Russia Great Britain France

The Central Powers (Always Bet On Granny) Austria-Hungary Bulgaria Germany Ottoman Empire

Germans sank the Lusitania, a British merchant ship, killing 128 Americans.

Germany sent a telegram to Mexico urging them to join the Central Powers and attack the U.S.

German “U-boats” sank 8 more American ships.

New and deadly technologies made the open ground of WWI battlefields treacherous.

Trench warfare was the answer.

But life in the trenches was tough.

Americans at home were asked to ration food and energy resources as well as to buy war bonds.

Once again women and minorities are asked to fill the jobs of men gone off to war.

Treaty of Versailles ended WWI, but ruined Germany’s economy which will lead to another war.

In addition to Germany having to pay back all of Europe for war damages, they also lost land.

Major changes to Europe’s landscape after WWI.

The only one of Wilson’s Fourteen Points that made it into the Treaty of Versailles An organization designed to allow countries to solve their problems peacefully. U.S. senators refused to let the U.S. join the League because they wanted us to stay out of other countries problems.
