Warm-up, 2/5 (week ending 2/9) Define nationalism. How did nationalism lead the countries of Africa to reject European rule? Answer: Nationalism is a belief that the people of a country should govern themselves (pride in one’s own country). Nationalism led to the desire to govern their own countries without European involvement.

Answer: Autocratic – citizens participate little or not at all; one ruler makes all the decisions, he/she has the final say with no one checking his/her power Democratic – citizens participate in their gov. and have a say in decisions (voting); the power of the gov. rests in the hands of the people
