Solid Waste Management 100 community events per year Environmentally-Sound Disposal 20 tons of solid waste is transported and disposed of every 10 minutes (about 1,000,000 tons per year). Renewable Energy Production We generate enough power for 80,000 homes or about 90 MW of electricity. Emergency Response (Hurricanes, tornadoes, snow, flooding) Fairfax County Solid Waste Management What Is the Solid Waste Management Program? Environmentally-sound disposal Successfully manage over 1 million tons of trash per year in an environmentally- sound manner The program pays for itself from fees that customers pay for disposal services. These fees also pay for community benefit programs such as HHW disposal, business hazardous waste disposal events, electronics recycling, personal document shredding and all of the outreach and education activities conducted by the program. Renewable energy production Solid waste is disposed of by combusting trash for power production resulting in the generation of renewable energy, enough for 80,000 homes Methane gas is collected from the two closed landfills to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while generating power. Both landfill gas projects support the energy needs of county facilities (Noman Cole WWTP, the operations facility and the truck wash at I-66 and the WMATA bus garage). Pollution prevention and community engagement The household hazardous waste and the e-waste recycling programs are both aimed at keeping unacceptable waste of the waste-to-energy facility. These programs, along with our extensive community outreach and education activities, have been conducted for many years as we partner with FCPA,FCPS, business organizations and many other community groups. Recycling During 24 years, the county has successfully recycled about 9 million tons of materials. The recycling rate has steadily increased over the past decade. The rate for 2013 is 48%, which is reflective of current economic conditions. The Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program continues to find new ways to reduce the quantity of waste and recycling generated and other recycling opportunities. Refuse collection Fairfax County staff collect trash and recycling from only 10% of households in County, which includes bulky waste, for a fee. Curbside vacuum leaf service is provided to about half of the county’s collection customers for a fee which funds the program. Fairfax County staff also collect trash and recycling for about 220 properties that the county owns and occupies, less than ½ of one percent of all businesses in the county. County transported over 600,000 tons of waste from the I-66 Transfer Station to the Covanta facility last year, which is about 30,000 round trips. County served almost 259,000 residents (and businesses) in 2013. Emergency response Solid Waste is one of the county agencies available to immediately respond with trained staff and heavy equipment when there is an emergency situation in the county including: 1) flood response and clean up; 2) response to hurricanes, tornadoes and high wind events and 3) debris management from a variety of emergencies. Solid Waste provides both routine and emergency snow removal services at County facilities, including the major snow storms of 2010 and 2014. Pollution Prevention and Community Engagement 100 community events per year Refuse Collection Collection of 10% of household waste and recyclables Recycling The countywide recycling rate is about 50%
