Extracellular recording apparatus. Extracellular recording apparatus. We performed en passant extracellular recordings from the antennal nerve while simultaneously bending the antenna flagellum at prescribed position and velocities with a voice coil actuator to simulate the animal encountering wall projections. A linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) sensor, mounted in parallel with the actuator, measured the actual position of the wall. We fixed the legs and body of the animal to a platform with insect pins. The head, scape and pedicel segments of the antenna were fixed with glue.
