Capturing gesture
What is gesture. it is the movement between things What is gesture? it is the movement between things. The movement that connects shapes or forms. It’s simple to understand, but difficult to put into practice. We are so tempted to focus on the details of the human figure because we think that it what will make our drawing look better. But this is very wrong, and the reality is that the details are nothing without the gesture.
Tips to follow when capturing gestures Line of Action- start by finding the longest line (head to toes) that captures the shape the body is in. Longest Axis- head to foot and arm to arm. The two first gesture lines that will guide the rest of your drawing. CSI- get the main gesture traits by only using simple lines in the shapes of the letters C, S, and I. You can use a combination of these but try to keep your beginning gesture lines as simple as possible. Relaxed and tense curves- relaxed curves should be used to show the parts of the body that flow more easily. Tense curves should be used to show sharp edges or large bends within the body (copy example from board)
Now it’s your turn… We are going outside to practice some gestures and you will all take turns posing. Remember that doing exaggerated poses will help your classmates better find the gesture when you first begin this practice. Please bring your chair with you if you do not want to sit on the ground
Form Form is three-dimensional and encloses volume and has height, width AND depth (as in a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, or a cylinder). Form may also be free flowing.
