NOTE SHEET 3 – The Cell Theory

Cell Discovery-1 1. Robert Hooke (1665) - English Scientist that viewed the first cell from a thin slice of cork He coined the term “cell” because the small units reminded him of monk cells in a monastery

Cell Discovery-2 2. Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1674) – Dutch businessman who made/improved microscopes, and is credited with seeing the first LIVING cells from pond water and blood van Leeuwenhoek is sometimes referred to the “Father of Microbiology”

Cell Discovery - 3 3. Matthias Schleiden (1838) - German botanist who stated that all plants are made of cells 4. Theodore Schwann (1839) – German zoologist who stated that all animals are made of cells

Cell Discovery - 4 5. Rudolf Virchow (1855) – German doctor who stated that cells come from other cells and proposed The Cell Theory

What is the cell theory? All living things are made of one or more cells All cells come from other cells Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things

What does “the basic units of structure & function in living things” mean? Cells are the smallest parts of a living thing that are built a specific way (structure) to do a specific job (function) Cells are the smallest things that have all 4 characteristics of life (R.O.A.D.)

Who was Robert Hooke and why was he important? He discovered cells looking at a piece of cork with a microscope and was the first to use the name “cells”

What did Hooke see? High Power
