Zuccato NewZ: Your Monthly Bulletin everything from A to Z! Mrs. Zuccato: abrandner@fsd157c.org / 815.469.3366 Building Fluency & Nonfiction Books! As we’re learning more about nonfiction texts & beginning our Creepy Creatures unit, students should be finding the main idea of a text & be able to locate 3 key details that help support that main idea! They can do this by using question words: who, what, when, where, why and how. We’ve practiced this skill as a group, & they’re already SO GOOD at it!  Reading Strategies for Fluency: Keep looking for clues in the pictures. Ask: Does that make sense? Does it look/sound right? We encourage the kids to go back and reread to self-monitor and correct themselves as readers. Retell stories you have heard together using first, next, then, last. I CAN… identify main topic and retell key details I CAN… recognize different types of text Happy Birthday!! Ben: 4/14 Bayne: 4/16 Peyton: 4/16 Q4 Sight Word Introduction! went are so from in that with what Becoming Master Spellers! We’re full-force into spelling C-V-C words both on our writing & during Words Their Way! ELA Skills: Spell words with short & long vowels! Keep practicing those tricky short vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u) I CAN… quickly read Q4 sight words (including Q1, Q2, & Q3!) I CAN… add or change letters to make new words I CAN… write C-V-C words & apply beginning, middle, & ending sounds in order to do that Digraphs I’m so excited to see how much the kids have been practicing their reading weekly!  As we move into 4th qtr. & read tougher books to challenge students & increase their fluency, digraphs appear all over – especially in sight words & No Excuse words! Please keep practicing identifying these digraphs & making the sounds for each one! th wh ch sh

Zuccato NewZ: Math Your Monthly Bulletin everything from A to Z! Mrs. Zuccato: abrandner@fsd157c.org / 815.469.3366 Writer's Workshop Students will be starting their own All About Books … and will even create a Table of Contents to make it easy for their readers to find the page they’re looking for! The students will think about topics in which they are experts (things they know all about) so that they can teach others. The writers will use nonfiction concept webs to plan across their fingers and create a table of contents. They will then be able to consider their audience when choosing a topic. They will also “try on” topics to make sure that they have enough facts to support the topic. The writers will revise by adding more to their pictures and words to teach more about their topics. They will be able to plan how their books are organized by using headings! The students will reread and revise by asking “what else can I add?” questions based from self and partner. The writers will “wonder” and “exclaim” to make their writing more interesting! The students will select and “fancy up” a piece to share with others. They will then reread and make their writing readable for an audience. Finally the writers will “fancy up” their All About informational books and celebrate their expertise with others!! Math In 4th qtr. students will be diving deeper into our new Eureka math resource, specifically getting into teen numbers! We’ll keep working hard on composing & decomposing teen numbers via the Number Bond model. The kids are ahead of the game, since they’ve been working so hard on manipulating numbers to fit within number bonds for the past qtr.!  (part + part = whole!) We’ve been adding new vocabulary to our math brains! We’re encouraging students to say the teens numbers in the “Say 10” way! Example: 12 is “ten two”, 16 is “ten six” Then, we'll move to decomposing numbers and quick subtraction facts within 5! Keep practicing those quick subtraction facts at home! I CAN … show what number is needed to add to another number to make 10. I CAN … say a teen number the “Say 10” way! I CAN … subtract quickly with facts up to 5 Reminders!
