Jeapordy

Why was it “vitally necessary” to conceal that the animals were starving? The animals knew the humans were watching, wanting them to fail.

Why does Napoleon order that the hen’s eggs be sold Why does Napoleon order that the hen’s eggs be sold? What happens when the hens rebel? Napoleon makes a deal with Whymper for 400 eggs a week for grain and meal The hens rations are stopped and 9 die as a result

Why do apparently innocent animals confess to being a traitor Why do apparently innocent animals confess to being a traitor? How do the animals react to the executions? Maybe to get it off their chests – or rather to get the slaughter over with. They are terrified and stunned that an animal was killed by another animal (Against the Commandment!

What does Squealer now say about Snowball, specifically about Mr What does Squealer now say about Snowball, specifically about Mr. Jones and the Battle of the Cowshed? Squealer says Snowball was on Jones’s side from the beginning, and that Snowball led the Battle of Cowshed with the humans to annihilate the animals

What do the animals, through the thoughts of Clover, finally admit to themselves? They realize that things have gotten out of control and admit that this is not what they had intended to happen when Old Major gave his speech Clover thinks things are worse than they wanted, but still better than when Jones ran the farm

Why must the animals stop singing “The Beasts of England”? The song is not necessary anymore – the revolution is over, and the animals have won.

Chapter 8

Who is Pinkeye and for what is he employed Who is Pinkeye and for what is he employed? Why has this become necessary? The pig who tests all of Napoleon’s food before he eats it; necessary because three hens admitted with plotting to Snowball t0 murder him

Describe the scandal surrounding the sale of the wood pile Napoleon sold the pile of lumber to Frederick; Napoleon has double-crossed Pilkington Napoleon is constantly siding himself with whoever he wants so that he can get what he wants

How is the battle against Frederick’s men different than the Battle of the Cowshed? It is a slaughter; many animals are killed and wounded; Napoleon leads from behind – does not act like a leader with a plan or tactics, like Snowball did

Explain why Squealer sees the battle as a victory The men were run off their soil, and they can rebuild the windmill if they want to

What one act destroys the symbol of all of the animals’ work, but unites the animals again? The men blow up the windmill with dynamite

Why were the animals instructed to plow the grazing field? Napoleon now plans to reseed and harvest barley to brew alcohol

What is the irony of Muriel remembering the Fifth Commandment differently? She did not remember it incorrectly – rather, Squealer was caught panting and changing the Commandments

Chapter Nine/Ten

Which animals are increasing in number? the pigs

How are the younglings treated differently? They are educated by Napoleon and a new school is being built; the other animals must step aside when pigs walk by; they wear green ribbons on their tails on Sundays

What is Boxer looking forward to at the end of the summer next year? Retirement and his pension

How does Napoleon betray Boxer? Napoleon sends Boxer to the knacker, even though Squealer insists that Boxer was sent to the hospital

How does Squealer claim Boxer spent his last hours?? Boxer died repeating his maxims and hailing Napoleon

How has the farm changed over time? Very few remembers the Rebellion; many have died; Snowball and Boxer are forgotten; Clover is old; Squealer is so fat he cannot see, and the pigs are growing in number; the farm is more prosperous and better organized; windmill is finished and they own a threshing machine and a hay elevator

According to Napoleon, where does true happiness lie? BONUS: what kind of propaganda technique is this? In hard work and living frugally

What is interesting about the fact that the dogs and pigs did not produce any food, but had no problem enjoying the food produced by the animals? They are becoming more human-like, flashing back to when Old Major warned against the humans taking and not producing

What does Clover see in the yard. Why is this shocking to the animals What does Clover see in the yard? Why is this shocking to the animals? How is this the new skill supported by the sheep? Squealer walking on his hind legs; the pigs now walk on two legs, like humans. This was one of the last commandments the animals kept The sheep bleat “four legs good, two legs better”

What is the single commandment? All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others

How is Napoleon’s transformation complete? He carries a whip, smokes a pipe, wears human clothes, plays cards, drinks beer

What do the animals see through the window? The pigs playing cards and having drinks with the humans

For what does Pilkington praise the pigs? He raises Napoleon and the other pigs for their ability to grow Animal Farm into a respected farm He commends them on their ability to control the lower animals and make them work harder with less food

What blatant lie about the animals’ “sole wish, now and in the past” does Napoleon make in his speech? What is the truth? To live at peace with and to conduct business with humans; this was never the goal – on the contrary, the wish was to annihilate humans and live in a world with only animals

What recent changes have been made at the end of the story? The animals no longer address each other as “Comrade”; the Sunday morning ritual was abolished; the flag became solid green; the name of the farm was changed to “Manor Farm”

DOUBLE JEAPORDY Count your points; decide whether or not you are going to bet DOUBLE OR NOTHING You must get 4 out of 4 correct

Why was the killing of the animals in Chapter 7 “justified” To make sure that animalism remains “pure” and no one will undermine the rebellion and hurt the farm

How do the pigs continually strip Snowball of his honor How do the pigs continually strip Snowball of his honor? What is the purpose of this degradation? They make up new stories about the Battle of Cowshed; they blame him for everything; they make the animals believe that everything that happened was legend, and that their memories were incorrect To make Napoleon look better in their eyes – to make him a hero for saving them from Snowball

In Chapter 9, how do the animals now have “greater dignity” as the farm changes? They are just being told by Squealer – in fact, they are even more like slaves than in Jones’s time

What is significant about what the animals see as they peek into the window? The pigs and humans now look the same – they cannot tell the difference
