Conflict Diamonds

Resource Curse Many African countries have an abundance of oil or mineral wealth. However, discovery of the resources is often followed by economic instability, conflict and environmental damage. Autocratic governments often times monopolize the wealth created from the resource while their people stay poor.

Conflict Diamonds Diamonds are considered by many to be one of the most precious stones in the world 68% of the world’s diamonds come from Africa Many diamonds are illegally smuggled out of Africa and are being used to finance wars & conflicts in Africa These are known as conflict diamonds https://vimeo.com/137373357

Many nations have banned the sale of conflict diamonds The UN started the Kimberly Process, which is supposed to determine the origin of all diamonds and place a small stamp inside the diamond Conflict minerals, used in cell pones are starting to replace conflict diamonds.
