Health Literacy WHO definition The cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health. Health literacy means more than being able to read pamphlets and successfully make appointments. By improving people’s access to health information and their capacity to use it effectively, health literacy is critical to empowerment. Health Literacy WHO definition

The ability to access and use health information is a fundamental skill which allows people to make informed choices and helps them to maintain their basic health. On a broader level, adequate levels of health literacy may help reduce some of the costs in the health system, prevent illness and chronic disease and reduce the rates of accidents and death Health literacy not only affects the person’s involvement in the formal health care system, but also decisions that they make in the home, workplace and community Health Literacy ABS
