What is identity development? Erikson: identity must be perceived by the individual and recognized by others. James Marcia: identity can be viewed as a structure of beliefs, abilities, and past experiences regarding the self.

Marcia’s Identity Statuses Identity Foreclosure Made a commitment to an occupational future. Have not experienced an identity crisis.

Identity Diffusion Identity Diffusion Not made a commitment. May or may not have experienced an identity crisis.

Identity Moratorium Identity Moratorium Actively exploring alternative commitments. Have not yet made a decision. Identity crisis.

Identity Achievement Identity Achievement Experienced an identity crisis. Made commitments necessary for building a sense of identity.
