The Scarlet Letter Presentation ~The characterization of Chillingsworth~ By: Jeremy Camacho, Bianca Lopez, Monique Marquez. Angelique Valdez, and Lauren Vaca ~Honors American Lit. p.1~

Who is Roger Chilingworth? Lauren Vaca Who is Roger Chilingworth? Originated from England Physician to the town of Boston Husband of Hester Personal “caretaker” of Reverend Dimmesdale Kind scholar to obsessed “Fiend” according to Hester (Hawthorne 118) Also seen as a “leech” and “the black man”

Roger Chillingworth’s Actions Jeremy Camacho Roger Chillingworth’s Actions “When he found the eyes of hester prynne fastened on his own, and saw that she appeared to recognize him, he slowly and calmly raised his finger, made a gesture with it in the air, and laid it on his lips.” (Hawthorne pg.57) “I shall see him tremble. I shall feel myself shudder, suddenly and unawares. Sooner or later, he must needs be mine.” (Hawthorne pg.70) “So dark, disturbed, and evil, was his look, he rose up out of some nether region,-to snatch back his victim from what he sought to do.”(Hawthorne pg.224) Tell Dimmesdale not to confess so that he can continue to torture him Allows Mr. Dimmesdale to live with him so that he may find out who the father is Is considered somewhat of a leech and Mr. Dimmesdale is the host since he is getting worse and Chillingworth is sucking the life out of him Lost all life worth once Dimmesdale confesses and dies after him within a year Left Pearl a good amount of property, in New England and England as well

{Other characters’ reactions to Chillingsworth} Angelique Valdez {Other characters’ reactions to Chillingsworth} Other characters refer to him as “the black man” (56) Anything or anyone relating to the devil or seen with evil inside it or oneself Chillingsworth is seen as evil because of his physical deformities ( this was very common back in this time ) The other villagers also compare him to a leech ( 118) A leech is a creature that latches onto a specific victim and sucks their blood Leech: Chillingsworth // victim: Dimmesdale By sucking their blood from the victim’s body the leech will eventually kill them A leech needs a victim in order to live and without one the leech will die Ex: how Chillingworth's death occurred later the same of year of Dimmesdale's

The Inner Thoughts of Roger Chillingworth Lauren Vaca The Inner Thoughts of Roger Chillingworth “ ‘What evil have I done the man?’ asked Roger Chillingworth again.” (Hawthorne 117) Claims to be most the one who was most wronged by the affair Feels obligated to avenge Dimmesdale Does not feel like he has sinned or inflicted enough revenge Damaged once Dimmesdale escapes him May later feel remorse, inheritance to pearl

Physical Description of Roger Chillingworth Monique Marquez Physical Description of Roger Chillingworth Back in england- Intellectual, studios,Calm & Quite A pure and upright man, a decent husband for hester “There she beheld another countenance, of a man well stricken in years, a pale, thin, scholar- like visage, with eyes dim and bleared by the lamplight that had served them to pore over many ponderous books.” (Hawthorne 55) First encounter- “ Again, at the first instant of perceiving that thin visage, and the slight deformity” (Hawthorne 57) Small in stature, aged white man & intelligence in his features Throughout the story- Physical stature grows uglier throughout the story

Conclusion of Chillingworth Bianca Lopez Chillingworth’s deformity manifests his malicious character. He exhibits this malicious character by psychologically torturing Dimmesdale. “Would he not suddenly sink into the earth, leaving a barren and blasted spot, where, in due course of time would be seen deadly nightshade, dogwood, henbane.”(Hawthorne 158) ~The three plans that Hawthorne lists connote witchcraft and the mischievousness and wickedness of Chillingworth’s character. Although he has exhibited neglect toward Pearl and Hester, towards the end of the book he shows Compassion towards them, compensating for his Past actions
