SCAMPER

SCAMPER is a technique you can use to spark your creativity. It is an acronym. Every letter stands for a new way to think. On the next slides, you will see what each letter stands represents. This process was created by Bob Eberle in the 1970s.

S - Substitute Remove some part of the item, or idea and replace it with something else. Substitute the laces for velcro.

C-Combine Join or force together two or more elements of your item or idea. + = + =

A- Adapt Change some part of your problem so that it works better than it did before. I adapted the bike to make it work better by changing regular bike tires into tires for a mountain bike.

M-Modify Change the attributes of the item. Attributes include: size, shape, texture, color, attitude, and so on. I modified the car by making it longer. I modified the iPads by changing the colors.

P- Put to Other Uses Suggest a new and unusual purpose for your item. Put a tire to other uses by making it a swing.

E – Eliminate (Erase) remove something from your item, simplify, or reduce Eliminate the cord from a phone.

R – Reverse or Rearrange Change the order of something on your item. I reversed a jacket.

Assignment You will be using SCAMPER to redesign: 3rd grade a bathtub. 4th and 5th grade a Samurai helmet or armor.

SCAMPER is attributed to Bob Eberle SCAMPER is attributed to Bob Eberle. SCAMPER is an acronym for seven thinking techniques that help those who use them come up with unique ideas and solutions.   S Substitute - Remove some part or thing, and replace it with something else. I will substitute ______________________________________ for ___________________________________________________. Illustration C Combine – Join or force together two or more elements of your subject matter and consider ways that such a combination might move you toward a solution. I will combine my __________________ with ___________________________________________.

A Adapt - Change some part of your item so that it works better than it did before.   I will adapt my __________________ by ___________________ ___________________________________________.
