Last lesson… Gender and life chances

Recap: What is Feminism? A theory which sees the biggest conflict in society as between men and women Radical feminism – wants to see bigger changes and feel inequality still exists

What is patriarchy? Society is ruled by men

What is double burden? Women have careers but they are still expected to be responsible for housework and child care.

Thinking skills : Why do women experience a greater amount of poverty? There is a link between gender and poverty. Much female poverty is hidden in official statistics.   Causes of female poverty are: low earnings, poor qualifications, caring and domestic work, limited pension contributions, longevity into old age, single parenthood, high costs of childcare.

Lesson 6 – changes to gender roles Learning aims for this lesson: To understand the effect that changes in gender roles have had upon men.

Who is this?

And this?

And this?

Definitions - recap Sex – biological grouping – what makes us male and female Gender –this is effected and created by social and cultural influences (what is means to be a man and or a woman) Not fixed - This changes over time

Recap: Social construction of Gender The idea that the norms of gender vary from society to society and over time

What roles have men traditionally been associated with in society? Head of family Protector Bread winner Decision maker Leader Strong Not showing emotions

Masculinity Is a set of culturally determined norms for men traditionally including being in charge, strong and aggressive

Breadwinner The main wage earner in a family As women’s role has changed in society, men have had to adapt from being the main bread winner.

New Man Emerged in the 1990s A set of norms which included men showing their emotions, being more caring and taking on some female roles

House husband This is where men and women swap roles. The man stays at home looking after the house and children, whilst women go out to work.

Crisis of masculinity The idea that the norms for being a man are not clear anymore. Men are not sure of their place in society.

Crisis of Masculinity Society changed and so did the world of work. Jobs in mines, factories and shipbuilding started disappearing More office based and manual jobs appeared Some sociologist suggest that men were not sure how to act anymore Traditional power in the family was gone

A question to consider… Changes and improvement for women have had an impact on men’s role in society. There continues to be huge social change. Do you think that males and females will become more similar or different?
