division algorithm Before we study divisibility, we must remember the division algorithm. r dividend = (divisor ⋅ quotient) + remainder.
How do we divide decimals?
Decimal Division You must learn the rules. Dividing a decimal by a whole number 1.2 ÷ 2 Divisor = 2 Dividend = 1.2 Step 1: move the decimal in the dividend.

When dividing a decimal by a whole number, place the decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend. Then divide as you.
Dividing by decimals Mr. Johnk Whatever you multiply your divisor by, you must also do to the dividend! The shortcut is to just move the decimal.

Dividing by Decimals 6.1.3.1 Multiply and divide decimals and fractions, using efficient and generalizing procedures, including standard algorithms.

I can… Divide by decimal numbers Self Assessment 5- I can do it without help & teach others. 4- I can do this with no help, but I don’t know if I can explain it. 3- I can do this with a little help. 2- I can do this with a lot of help! 1- I don’t have a clue.

Swinging Monkeys! Follow these steps and you will be great at dividing decimals! Remember: Whatever the OUTSIDE monkeys do – the INSIDE monkeys do also! Monkey See; Monkey Do!

Division Vocabulary “Roof” Quotient “Outside” Divisor “Inside” Dividend

Division Vocabulary 12.64 ÷ .2 12.64 divided by .2

Dividing by Decimals Steps Make the divisor (outside number) a whole number by moving (swingin’) the decimal to the right as many places as it takes to make it a WHOLE NUMBER. In MONKEY TERMS: Whatever the outside monkey does (how far it swings) the inside monkey does also. Then the monkey climbs up and sits on the roof!

Swingin’ Monkeys Moved (swung) the decimal point 1 place to the right Divisor Moved (swung) the decimal point 1 place to the right Swingin’ Monkey

Dividing by Decimals Steps 2. Move (swing) the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places as the divisor. Dividend Moved (swung) the decimal point 1 place to the right

Dividing by Decimals Steps 3. Place (swing) the decimal point in the answer (quotient) lined up with the decimal point in the dividend (on the roof).

Dividing by Decimals Steps 4. Now, divide as usual!

Steps in Dividing Decimals 4. Divide the numbers. Make sure the decimal point stays lined up. 6 3 2 12 6 6 4

What is actually happening . . . When you move the decimal one place to the right to create a WHOLE number – you are actually multiplying it by 10! When you move the decimal two places to the right to create a WHOLE number – you are actually multiplying it by 100! Three?

Let’s Practice Remember: The more neatly you write and keep the numbers lined up, the BETTER!

Your Turn - Practice 14.2 ÷ 0.2 = 25.5 ÷ 1.5 = 0.99 ÷ 0.2 = 25.5 ÷ 0.28 = 71 17 5 91.1

I can… Divide by decimal numbers Self Assessment 5- I can do it without help & teach others. 4- I can do this with no help, but I don’t know if I can explain it. 3- I can do this with a little help. 2- I can do this with a lot of help! 1- I don’t have a clue.
