Dispatches from the Front What clerkship faculty need to know about students coming out of Foundations Curriculum

Objectives: Appreciate recent events at UWSOM Describe institutional response to events Be aware of what students are learning now Compare and contrast definitions of the words “racism and racist” Understand resources available to all faculty

Recent Events Call to Action about Institutionalized Racism 5/2016 Post-election distress and difficulty communicating among students 11/2016 Peaceful Protest (A300 and White Coat Ceremony) 12/2017

Institutional Response Formation of ARAC (Anti-Racism Action Committee) Developed Recommendations Deans/Department Chairs/ Residency Program Directors Robin DiAngelo Creation of Implicit Bias Online Module Town Hall in February 2018 Regional faculty development Department organized faculty development Other institutional work with the UW Medicine clinical sites

At the same time, new course Ecology of Health and Medicine Launched with E2017 Diversity, Health Equity, Social Determinants of Health 4 weeks in Foundations 3 weeks in Patient Care/Explore and Focus

A Tale of Two Words Sick Racist This work is fraught with peril, am I mis-using this word? System vs individual

Racism as a system Racism a form of oppression in which one racial group dominates another (in US, whites are dominant group) system of advantage based on race oppression is society-wide, different than individual prejudice/bigotry Racist indicates who benefits from system

Now what? Students are very interested in thinking about this in the clinical learning environment. Race as a biological indicator vs. social construct. Mark do first bullet Amanda cover next

Where to go for help? Frequently asked questions… What is race-based medicine? How is this different from what I may have learned in medical school? My student came to me and told me that a patient used a micro-aggression towards them?  What does this mean?  How should I respond?  My student used a word that is in English, but I’m not sure what it means in this context, is there a place where I can look it up? I wanted to discuss the medication plan for the patient’s concern and the student asked how I address the social determinants of health of this problem?  What do they mean by this question? When I went to medical school and residency, I got training in cultural competency. Now my student asked about cultural humility.  How is this different? https://blogs.uw.edu/somehm/
