CTE 8th Grade Recruiting Parent Night March 27, 2018 Okay, in the interest of time, we are going to go ahead and get started. My name is Patricia Powers. I’m the Director of Resource Development for the GCSD. One of my babies is Career and Technical Education, which is what brings us together tonight. Each year, we hold an informational meeting like this to provide parents with the opportunity to see what types of career tech programs we offer and ask questions prior to selecting a program to apply to. You are here tonight because your child is in 8th grade and needs to select a program to begin in 9th grade. Prior to Spring Break, 8th graders visited all of our available programs and received information that will help them to decide their top choices. Tonight’s agenda will allow you as parents to see these programs as well, and get questions answered prior to submitting an application. Tonight, you’re going to hear from me and your secondary education director, and then I’m going to ask you to visit the program stations that are set up in the back. The program teachers are available at these stations to showcase their program, answer questions, and hand out any materials they may have. Each of you should have received a card when you came in. As you visit the stations, be sure to get the teacher to initial off on your card to indicate that you have gotten what you need from that station. When you have visited all of the stations and your card is filled, you will put your name and phone number on the back of the card and turn it in at the table in the foyer in order to be in the drawing for prizes. If you win, you will be contacted via that phone number, so be sure that you give us a working number. Ok? So let’s go ahead and get started.
“Applied” academics (Relevance/Rigor) Academic Credit PA/Fine Arts list Science Credit Application opportunities (Relationship) CTSO - leadership/scholarship/Competitions Internships, shadowing, business and industry Postsecondary opportunities Dual enrollment Articulated credit Industry Certifications (Rigor) – Career Readiness – Articulated credit – Graduation Requirements The first thing that I want to talk to you about is “What is CTE?” When you hear me say CTE, that means Career and Technical Education. CTE programs are programs within schools that tie together academics and career training. The courses are rigorous and relevant to the student. Since the student helps to choose the program they enroll in, the work that they do is meaningful to them. CTE programs also include opportunities to be involved in things that give real-world experience, they may offer opportunities for college credit, and they may also offer Industry Certifications for students. We’ll talk in a moment about what that means. What is Career and Technical Education?
Why Career Tech Ed? More than 70% of secondary CTE concentrators pursue postsecondary education after high school. Involvement with CTE minimizes the risk of students dropping out of high school. High school students involved in CTE are more engaged, perform better and graduate at higher rates. High school students involved in CTE have less disciplinary referrals. Students in CTE programs are more likely to earn a standard diploma. Students involved in CTE are less likely to be involved in bullying. Before we get into what we offer, I want to be sure that we are sharing with you WHY career tech programs are important. I’m going to show you some data, but what I want to point out is that students who are involved in CTE behave and perform differently than those students who are not involved. Students in CTE have higher GPAs, less disciplinary referrals, lower dropout rates, and are more likely to be eligible for scholarships. Also, CTE students are more likely to earn a diploma, can get special designations on their diploma, and are more likely to go to college and become employed.
Average Estimated Annual Earnings In addition to those things, I want to share with you the value of an industry certification. We’re going to talk about what that is. But all other factors aside, if a student earns an industry certification, they earn more on average than persons who have not. Earnings are not everything, but my goal is to help my kids to become self-sufficient, and I’m sure that is your goal as well.
This shows some of the data that I wanted to share This shows some of the data that I wanted to share. You can see that in addition to the things I just mentioned, students that go through these types of programs are also less likely to be chronically absent, are more likely to earn credit in accelerated courses, and behave a lot better in school.
What are Industry Certifications Industry Certifications are credentials that your child can receive by passing a 3rd party assessment after completion of specific CTE coursework. Students can obtain a Merit designation on his/her diploma through obtaining an Industry Certification. Industry Certifications demonstrate that your child has met industry standards for knowledge and skills. Industry Certifications make your child more employable. So, moving on, I want to explain what an industry certification is. An industry certification is a credential that your child can earn by passing a 3rd party assessment showing that they have met the standard for knowledge and skills needed. Your child can earn a Merit designation on his or her diploma if they get an IC, and they make your child more employable. In addition to that, many of our industry certifications will be accepted by colleges for free college credit. You’ll see that in our program overviews.
What is STEM? Science Technology Engineering Math Applied Interdisciplinary The next term I want to explain is STEM. You are going to see this STEM logo on some of our programs. This logo means that the program is classified by the state as being a program that is very involved with applied Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math concepts. In STEM programs, those content areas all kind of work together.
Who are these programs available to? All incoming 9th graders at Trenton or Bell Students may attend magnet programs at either school, with school-to-school transportation provided by the district.
How do I get into a program? Must submit an application by deadline Friday, April 6 DUE Student will be interviewed May 7-8 Professional attire!!! Notifications: May 18
