Strain Gauge Project LeShaun Alexander

Problem: Detecting and measuring flow rates of very shallow and slow moving water requires special equipment which can be very expensive. The need to measure these flow rates is relevant to creek restoration societies locally.

Objectives Analysis A means to Measure Flow Rate in Shallow streams Portable Lightweight < 5lb………………5 < 10lb……..………4 <15lb………..……..3 < 20lb……………..2 < 30lb……...………1 > 30lb…………..0 Inexpensive <$25……….4 <$50……..3 <$75…………2 <$100……….1 >$100……….0 Easy to Use Usable with Minimal Assistance Non-Student Can Use…3 College Student………..2 Creek Employee………..1 Engineer……………….0 Large Screen Graphics Display…3 LCD Display………2 Scrolling Display…..1 No display……..….0

Assigning Metrics Objective: Lightweight Objective: Inexpensive Units: Rating weight on scale from 0 (worst) to 5 (best) Metrics: Total weight of device from 0 (more than 30lbs.) to 5 (less than 5lbs.) Objective: Inexpensive Units: Rating cost of materials only 0 (worst) to 5 (best) Metrics: Total cost of materials from 0 (more than $100) to 4 (less than $25) Objective: Large enough screen to view information Units: Rating whether the device has a large enough screen 0 (worst) to 3 (best) Metrics: 0 (Device has no display) to 3 (Uses graphical display)

Assigning Metrics (cont.) Objective: Usable with minimal assistance Units: Rating ease of use on scale from 0 (worst) to 3 (best) Metrics: Ease of use from 0 (Only an engineer can use it) to 3 (anyone who can read the manual)
