Bar Charts

Objectives By the end of this section, students should be able to: represent data in a bar chart. Use a chart.

Bar Charts As the name suggests, a Bar Chart is a graph with rectangular bars. The bars can be vertically placed.

Bar Charts Or the bars can be horizontally placed.

Bar Charts In both cases, a Bar Chart is used to represent the data that has been collected, such that the required characteristics can be visually compared. Here, the highest number of students got a ‘B’ while the least number of students got a ‘D’. The Bar Chart makes it visually easier to depict such small features.

Bar Charts Representing the data collected about the brand of mobile versus the number of students. Step 1: Decide on the type of Bar Graph. Step 2: Place the elements on one axis. Step 3: Locate the numerical values for each element. Step 4: Draw the Bar for each element.

Bar Charts The data can be represented horizontally on a bar chart. Note: Teacher to point out that Nokia is the most common brand of mobile phone among the 20 students and Motorola is the least common one.

Bar Charts The bar can also be drawn vertically as follows:

Bar Charts Features of a bar chart. (Refer to the above bar charts) We must give a title: Brand of Mobile Phones of Students. We must label the axes properly. Vertical axis: Number of students Horizontal axis: Brand of mobile phone We should use a suitable scale. In this example, the vertical axis varies from 0 to 12 and are spaced at 2-unit intervals. All bars should be drawn of equal width. We must leave same space between consecutive bars. We may shade the bars to make it appear attractive.

Consolidation Work Qu. 1. The following table shows the amount of rainfall (to the nearest 10 mm) in the district of Plaine Wilhems for the first six months of a year.

Consolidation Work Complete the bar chart representing the data for the amount of rainfall.

Consolidation Work Qu. 2. A supermarket sold the following quantity of vegetables on a certain day. Represent the following data on the bar chart below. One example has been done for you.

Consolidation Work Represent the following data on the bar chart below. One example has been done for you.

Consolidation Work Qu. 3. The bar chart below represents the number of students who have chosen various fields of study at a training centre.

Consolidation Work Study the bar chart and complete the table below:

Consolidation Work Qu. 4. Study the bar chart and then answer the questions that follow.

Consolidation Work In which subject did Anjelina score the highest mark? ____________ How many more marks did she obtain in Science than in English? ______________ How many marks did she obtain altogether in the four subjects? ______________

End of the Lesson: Bar Chart
