Acknowledging Adherence to Rules and Procedures Design Question 7 - Element 35: What does the teacher do to acknowledge adherence to rules and procedures?

Before we begin… Before we begin talking about element thirty-three, let’s be sure that there is an understanding about how the elements in Design Question 7 are related. This is important as you plan your lessons. Directions: watch the video on the next slide. Please take notes, documenting how the elements in Design Question 7 are related.

Video – How do the elements in DQ7 relate to each other? Please click on the link to view the video from Pasco County Schools that provides an introduction to the elements in Design Question 7.

How do the elements in Design Question 7 relate to each other? You should have noticed that: Elements 33, 34, and 35 are intertwined. First, you must demonstrate “withitness” to know when students are or are not adhering to rules and procedures. Then, you must respond accordingly. Although these elements are definitely enacted on the spot in response to student behaviors, they should definitely be planned for. You and your students should know in advance what the consequences for lack of adherence to rules will be as well as how you will acknowledge those students who are adhering the rules. Now let’s talk about element 35, specifically.

Review Teacher and Student Evidence NOTE: This list of evidence is not all inclusive but is instead a list of possible examples.

Review Scale for Element 35

Desired Effect in the Students The desired effect is, “Students adhere to rules and procedures as a result of the teacher acknowledging adherence to rules and procedures.” To receive an Innovating rating, the teacher must monitor and make accommodations so that every student in their classroom achieves this desired effect.

Task While watching the following video, identify: Strategies the teacher use to acknowledge adherence to rules and procedures. Other strategies that can be used to acknowledge adherence to rules and procedures. She also takes the time to specifically describe the behaviors that prompt her praise. Q: What other strategies could be used to acknowledge adherence to rules and procedures? A: There are a wide variety of strategies that can be used to accomplish this task. Students may give nonverbal praise by smiling at a student or giving them a high five. Additionally, I teacher may contact the child’s home to give positive feedback regarding behavior. Q: Are the strategies used in element 34 or 35 more important according to Marzano? A: Both sets of strategies are essential for effective classroom management. However, the strategies in element 35 contribute to an overall positive classroom culture.

Task While watching the video, identify the strategies the teacher uses to acknowledge adherence to the rules and procedures. After watching the video you will be asked to identify the teacher and student evidence to rate the teacher on this element.

A: The teacher verbally praised the entire class for their success in carrying out literature circles for the first time the previous day. She thanked them and then acknowledged that this is mentally a much more difficult task and that it requires total commitment from the students. She also provided nonverbal reinforcement by smiling at the students and clapping her hands together joyfully.

Task On the next slide is the teacher and student evidence. What evidence did you see and were able to document? Use this to rate the teacher as you walk through the next few slides.

How to Rate Teacher and Student Evidence The teacher provides nonverbal signals that a rule or procedure has been followed. She provided nonverbal reinforcement by smiling at the students and clapping her hands together joyfully. Teacher gives verbal cues that a rule or procedure has been followed. The teacher verbally praised the entire class for their success in carrying out literature circles for the first time the previous day. Review Scale for Element 35 to Rate the Teacher

How we Rated the Teacher We rated this teacher as applying. She definitely acknowledged adherence to the rules and procedures both verbally and nonverbally for the entire class. She can be observed making eye contact and scanning the class, which demonstrates that she is monitoring. Due to the limitations of the video, it is difficult to determine whether these actions affected every student’s behavior. As a result, an innovating rating is not warranted in this case.
