Presentation transcript:

BELLWORK: April 15th List four ways Germany was punished under the Treaty of Versailles. Which countries were not allowed to participate in the Paris Peace Conference? Why? What type of government do you think the Allied powers want established in Germany? Why? Define totalitarianism. (page 557) THINKER: Make a prediction  How will anger over the Treaty of Versailles lead to the rise of totalitarian governments in Europe?

At the beginning of class….. Your project is due! Make sure you submit it in a way that I can access it! Either turn it in (poster, cartoon, paper) or email it to me! If there is a presentation component, you will present this on Wednesday. You will lose 5 points each day it is late. Turn in any late/missing work to their corresponding trays. Today is the LAST day to turn in late work!

The German Weimar Republic As you know, post-WWI a provisional government is established in Germany. What is the purpose of a provisional government? Eventually Germany will implement a republic, or a representative-type democracy Unfortunately, this republic becomes ineffective and 14 years after WWI it collapses. This makes way for Hitler and his totalitarian government ….. Nazism

The German Weimar Republic Today, you will read the article “The German Weimar Republic: Why Democracy Failed” and answer the 20 questions on the worksheet. You need to focus on HOW and WHY democracy failed in Germany, as well as, Hitler’s rise to power. These are your notes!!! Do not write on the reading!

BELLWORK: April 16th Finish your Weimar Republic rdng/wkst FIRST! Define totalitarian state. Describe how the government was set up under the Weimar Republic. Why did President Hindenburg appoint Hitler as chancellor in 1933? List TWO things Hitler did after he was appointed chancellor. THINKER: Why did democracy fail in Germany?

WWII Governments Maintain democracy or establish totalitarianism???

WWII TOTALITARIAN DICTATORS! Benito Mussolini (IT) Adolph Hitler (GR) Josef Stalin (USSR) If these totalitarian regimes were so oppressive, why did people support them?

Review Describe the characteristics and beliefs of communism. Write these beliefs in the “communism” column of the worksheet.

Nazism vs. Fascism Next, you will learn about two other totalitarian governments that came to power after World War I – Nazism and Fascism. Work with a partner! Partner #1: Read about Fascism and complete that column on the worksheet Partner #2: Read about Nazism and complete that column on the worksheet When BOTH partners finished their individual section, meet together and discuss your findings. As a pair, complete the worksheet. (You do NOT need to do acts of aggression yet)
