Rhythm

What is Rhythm?

Rhythm- Rhythm refers to any kind of movement or structure of dominant and subordinate elements in sequence. In other words it refers to the movement of the viewer’s eye. Rhythm is based on repetition, particularly repetition of similar elements or recurring motifs.

What types of rhythm are there?

Rhythm and Motion Alternating Rhythm Progressive Rhythm Rhythmic Sensations

Rhythm and Motion- the shapes and arrangement of elements aid in producing rhythmic motion. Using musical language we could describe the range of movement as legato or staccato. Legato is slow, connecting and fluid. Staccato abruptly changes with dynamic contrast. There is of course rhythm that exists in the in-between space of legato and staccato.

Legato is a slow, connecting and fluid type of rhythm.

Staccato is rhythm that abruptly changes with dynamic contrast. Piet Mondrian

Alternating Rhythm- is produced when the same or similar element(s) reappear in a regular order or successive patterns.

Alternating Rhythm- is produced when the same or similar element(s) reappear in a regular order or successive patterns. Bridget Riley

Progressive Rhythm- is a variation of alternating rhythm, but there is a feeling of a sequential pattern or a shape that changes in a regular manner. This type of rhythm is most often achieved with a progressive variation of the size of a shape, though its color, value, or texture could be the varying element.

Rhythmic Sensations - occur when particular elements resonate memories, or stimulate the senses more than just visually. When the effect of a visual experience actually stimulates one of our other senses, it is called kinesthetic.
