TASK 1 10 minutes At the top-left of your next right-hand sketchbook page draw a grid of 9 squares, each measuring 3cm x 3cm. 3cm 3cm What is ‘MEDIA’? Can you give me an example? TASK 2 What is ‘MARK MAKING’? 8cm At the top-right draw a rectangle measuring 8cm x 10cm. Pencil Now go around the Art room and write down the names of all the different media. Start with ‘pencil’ as number 1. 2. Biro 10cm etc.

Learning Objectives What I’m looking for… You will: Learn that a lot of different marks can be made with only one media. Learn that the same marks in different media will look different. Learn to make lots of different marks in different media. What I’m looking for… You have an understanding of what mark making means. You know the names of different types of media. You have an ability to control the media successfully to create a range of marks/textures.

Select 3 of the media from your list (not pencil) 15 minutes Select 3 of the media from your list (not pencil) Using each media you will make some marks in 3 of the boxes of your 9 square grid. Use 3 horizontal squares for 1 media and then go to the next one. Make a different mark in each box Fill the box completely with that same mark. Write the name of the media at the side of the row of boxes you have filled. graphite

Which media is the easiest to control and why? 5 minutes Which media is the easiest to control and why? Which media is the most difficult to control and why? Which media is the most versatile and why? Which media is the least versatile and why? How do you make different marks with the same media?

Now draw another 3 square horizontal grid each measuring 3cm x 3cm. 10 minutes Now draw another 3 square horizontal grid each measuring 3cm x 3cm. Using your 2B pencil in different ways, create 3 different textures that fill the entire boxes.

Swap your sketchbook with another person who is on the same differentiation level as you. 3 minutes Look at their media experiments work. Using your personal judgement, assess this work using the criteria opposite. Give a positive comment or some advice for improvement on the progression sheet in the back of their book. Assessment Criteria: Good control of each media (stayed inside the grids – neatly applied) Creative use of the media (using it in 3 different, but successful, ways)

PREP.WORK Access the Art and Design department VLE page. Under the YEAR 7 heading click on the ‘Mark Making and Colour Theory’ link. Download the ‘Design Brief’ and either: a) print it and stick it in your book or b) adjust the fonts and colours on Word before printing it and sticking it in your book or c) create your own decorative page with a heading and copy the information out neatly. (merits will be given for high quality pages in options b or c)

3 minutes Turn to the back of your sketchbook and thinking about the learning objectives from the start of the lesson, tick each statement that you feel confident you have learnt. Now at the right-hand side, write down one specific thing that you have learnt today that you didn’t know before. Learning Objectives You will: Learn that a lot of different marks can be made with only one media. Learn that the same marks in different media will look different. Learn to make lots of different marks in different media.
