Mark Macmillan Public Policy Advisor & Fiona Sinclair CST Manager KibbleWorks and KibblePlus: Our experience of employment training for young people Mark Macmillan Public Policy Advisor & Fiona Sinclair CST Manager The Kibble Experience 28/07/2019

“To found and endow in Paisley an institution for the reclamation of youthful offenders against the law” Established 1859 Core business first 100 years residential care and employment training Core business next 50 years residential care and education Longitudinal view provided a insight into what had been lost in transition The Kibble Experience 28/07/2019

Social Enterprise “A social enterprise is a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners.” The Kibble Experience 28/07/2019

KibbleWorks Established in 2003 Aim: to provide employment training to young people in transition from residential care Vehicle: Cluster of small social enterprises Approach: Get the “job ready” / “work ready” Output: Over 400 young people have received employment training with 63% leaving to positive destinations The Kibble Experience 28/07/2019

The KibbleWorks Approach Real employment training in real business Focus upon what’s important Build upon the best of both worlds Quality not quantity The Kibble Experience 28/07/2019

KibblePlus Established in 2010 Aim: to provide employment training to 18 to 24 yr olds Vehicle: Four larger social enterprises and associated support services Approach: Get the “job ready” / “work ready” Output: 93 young people have received employment training with 43% of first cohort moving into employment The Kibble Experience 28/07/2019

What have we learned? The work has to be real This approach is expensive, but not as expensive as not doing it The Kibble Experience 28/07/2019

What would we like to see? The a broader uptake in the creation of client reflective workforces More organisations focussing on the “job at hand” The Kibble Experience 28/07/2019
