How do current core learning goals integrate into courses? Faculty Development Opportunity Faculty Salon September 24, 2015

Learning goals for this salon… We should know: What the core learning goals are. We should be able to: Articulate the linkage between core learning goals and the core courses we teach Design assignments that enable us to measure attainment of core learning goals

Addressing the learning goals What the core learning goals are. Distribute core learning goals and criteria Read goals and rubrics Compare previous and current understanding of the goals In what ways can we help students understand what the core learning goals are?

Addressing the learning goals Articulate the linkage between core learning goals and the core courses we teach Distribute existing and blank curriculum maps. Insert courses on the map. Discuss how the learning goals are represented in our courses.

How do courses fit into the core curriculum assessment? Curriculum map Connect learning goals to assignments

Addressing the learning goals Design assignments that enable us to measure attainment of core learning goals Identify existing assignments that at least partially address the learning goals. Consider the need to adjust existing assignment or develop a new assignment to more effectively address the learning goals. Develop an approach or an assignment that would allow students to demonstrate learning of the goal.

Connecting learning goals to assignments Core learning goals addressed in the course Ways for students to show their learning, which are measurable Students will think critically and analytically about an issue, idea, or problem. Students will write an essay using literary critical techniques to establish and defend an interpretation of literature, and will address counter-interpretations.   Students will communicate effectively orally and in writing to various audiences. Students will address their ideas in discussion and written essays. The writing will be well-organized, clear, and consonant with Edited Standard Written English (ESWE). Students will follow ethical principles for academic work. Students will appropriately cite sources for their work. They will avoid plagiarism. Students will demonstrate appreciation for cultures different from their own. Students’ interpretations of literature will demonstrate appreciation for cultures and contexts from which the literature arises.

How do courses fit into the core curriculum assessment? How did core learning goals connect to these courses? How was that evident in assignments?

In the future… How will we connect the core learning goals to our courses and assignments?

Follow up What are the core learning goals? How do we include them in our courses and provide opportunities for students to show their learning of the goal?
