“Thirst” by Kristin Lewis Please take out worksheet Answer the questions on the worksheet provided in complete sentences. Be sure to include text evidence in your responses.

Final Review Please take out worksheet from yesterday on symbols, personification, central idea, mood and tone.

Central idea: main idea or key idea A main point the author is making What the article is mostly about NOT THEME!! Think of it as a thesis statement. Mood: how we are made to feel as readers or emotion evoked by author. Tone: is an attitude of a writer toward a subject or audience conveyed through the author’s choice of words. ex.- formal, informal, comic, serious, sarcastic, cheerful Personification: when objects take on human like qualities. Example: The leaves danced in the wind.

Central Idea- Main Idea of Text What is the central idea of the text? Use two pieces of evidence from the text to support your claim. A project that brought water from a well completely transformed the lives of people in Mozambique.

Central idea- Main idea of text Text- evidence “For the first time in Natalia’s life, clean, fresh water poured into her hands.” “Instead of spending her day fetching water, she goes to school.” “Villagers are rarely sick.” “They can bathe whenever they want. And they never go thirsty.” “she oversees a team of five adults.”

Symbolism- when an object represents something else. What does water symbolize in the article? Use two pieces of evidence from the text to support your claim. Water symbolizes life in this article. Evidence from article??

Text evidence- Clean water helps to prevent people from getting sick. With not having to fetch water, people are free to go to school and pursue their dreams.

3. The mood of the introduction of the story is sad and depressing 3. The mood of the introduction of the story is sad and depressing. Some of the words and phrases used to create this mood are, “this dark hour was the start of her day.” “She dragged herself out of bed-” The beginning of Natalia’s day is described as a “dark hour” and dragging herself out of bed gives us the feeling that it’s difficult for her to get up so early in the morning. It makes the reader feel sad that this is how her day begins.

Personification is the poetic device used in the statement, “Pipes can carry water down from nearby mountains.” As a reader we know this to be true because pipes can’t “carry water” as a person would. It gives the impression that the pipes are carrying the water down the mountain, as a person might carry water.

Writing Response How can something as simple as a well transform a person’s life? Use two pieces of text evidence from the article to support your response. Use RACE !!

R.A.C.E.S. Be sure to: Restate the question Answer with your own claim (thesis). Cite evidence from passage to support your answer. Explain how your evidence supports your claim (thesis). Sum up your ideas in an interesting and thoughtful concluding sentence.
