Racism: 1963 The 1960s are known collectively as period in which racial minorities demanded their rights as Americans and as human beings. From May 2nd to May 10th, Martin Luther King Jr organized protest to end segregation in businesses. The images of police brutality including the use of dogs, firehoses was seen by American across the country. The Birmingham protest helped convince the American public and the US government for the need for the Civil Rights Act 1964. Benson, Sonia, et al. Racism: 2016 2013 Treyvon Martin is shot and killed by a neighbor who is then acquitted for murder due to Florida’s stand your ground law starting the Black Lives Matter movement. Black Lives Matter protest erupt around police shooting black men. While some protests turned violent, this image of Ieshia Evans becomes viral when she calmly stands in front a line of police officers in full riot gear. She was arrested and eventually released. Racism While there has been progress in the United States towards equality for races, it is clear that there is still work that needs to be done. There are still concerns about how police and politicians handle the issue of race and ethnicity in the United States. Furthermore, minority groups in the US have learned to stand together and fight for each other’s rights. However, these images make it clear that the racism is still a part of American culture but so is the application of the 1st amendment which protects, “the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble”.
