WVSSAC UPDATE Presented by: Cindy Daniel, Ed.D., Assistant Executive Director June 2019

Did You Know? The WVSSAC was founded in 1916 with 11 charter member schools Today, there are 125 member high schools and 157 member middle schools The WVSSAC sanctions 19 different sports in addition to band. Robotics and archery are being planned for the future. In the 2018-19 school year, 86,294 students in grades 6-12 participated in a sport and/or band In 2018-19, 49 team state champions were crowned from 22 counties

DID YOU KNOW? The WVSSAC has several student recognition and scholarship programs including: Academic Achievement Awards – both team and individual Sportsmanship Awards Scholarships for children of coaches, ADs, bandmasters, or administrators Scholarships for state tournament program cover design PLEASE ENCOURAGE SCHOOLS TO PARTICIPATE AND SUBMIT APPLICATIONS

New Legislation

Senate Bill 605 Requires an Emergency Action Plan (EAP)to be completed and submitted online to the WVSSAC annually for each sport before the first day of practice Requires reporting of all athletes suffering or being suspected of suffering a concussion. Report must be submitted within 7 days. Adds licensed physical therapists (with proper training) to list of approved health care providers in the evaluation of concussions. Requires WVSSAC to discipline schools that do not complete/submit the Emergency Action Plans (fines up to $250 per sport)

Senate Bill 640 – Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act (WVDE Guidance) Requires schools to hold an informational meeting at the start of the year for parents and students to provide information on the warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest for children. Requires all coaches to complete the online sudden cardiac arrest course annually.

Senate Bill 60 – Athletic Trainers Still allows for Limited Football Trainer Authorization from the WVDE

REQUIREMENTS FOR PRINCIPALS FOR COACHES Attend a regional principal meeting Update/edit school and staff information on WVSSAC website Submit EAP online before first day of practice Submit all eligibility forms and rosters prior to first contest Verify physical forms for all athletes prior to first practice FOR COACHES Attend a sport specific rule clinic (head coach only) Complete and submit to school administrator an EAP before first day of practice Complete following online courses: Concussion in Sports (annually) Sudden Cardiac Arrest (annually) Heat Illness Prevention (one time for new coaches)

ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR 2019-20 AED Sale – 147 placed in schools during 2018-19 school year. Will announce another sale in early fall. Opioid Awareness Summit – September 17 (WVU Coliseum) and September 18 (MU Henderson Center). Contact the WVSSAC office for more information. PLEASE ENCOURAGE SCHOOLS TO ATTEND. Reclassification – will use October 1 2019 enrollment data for the 2020- 21 school year.
