Luke 5:12–14 While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” 13 And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him.
Luke 5:12–14 14 And he charged him to tell no one, but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
Be Clean! In this passage, we encounter a man that is desperate. This man is in a situation we could not even imagine, and yet, for many of us, it feels all too familiar. He is a man without hope -- without hope until he comes before the compassionate Christ who cleanses.
Be Clean! Leprosy itself is not flesh-eating, but, due to the loss of feeling in the extremities, those who have this disease tend to wear their own flesh out.
Be Clean! “The leprous person who has the disease shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head hang loose, and he shall cover his upper lip and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean.’ 46 He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease. He is unclean. He shall live alone. His dwelling shall be outside the camp.” – Lev. 13:45–46
Be Clean! There are two main reasons that go together: first, the man was to be quarantined so the disease would not spread.
Be Clean! Second, he must go outside of the camp lest he spread his uncleanness to them.
Be Clean! “And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, ‘Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.’” – Luke 5:12
Be Clean! Throughout the Bible, when an individual comes into the presence of God they rightly fall on their face.
Be Clean! In begging we can see a glorious truth shine forth: this man understands his need.
Be Clean! He does not ask to be healed. He does not ask to be made well. He does not ask to have the shame removed from him. He asks to be made clean. He longs to be restored to both God and His people, which will only come by being made clean. Not just healing, but cleansing.
Be Clean! When Jesus stretches out His hand toward the man and touches him the uncleanness of the man does not transfer to Jesus. No. Rather, the cleanness of Jesus transfers to the man.
Be Clean! When you come in contact with the Lord Jesus Christ you do not infect him with your sin, He makes you clean.
Be Clean! The call of the gospel is to repent and believe in Christ; and that we cannot and will not do apart from seeing ourselves correctly. We are all sinners in need of redemption.
John 6:37 says, “Whoever comes to me I will never cast out.” Be Clean! John 6:37 says, “Whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”
Be Clean! According to the law in Leviticus 14, after a man had been healed of his leprosy he was to go to the priest who would declare him to be clean. The priest could not heal the man, but rather recognized that he had been cured.
Be Clean! He gave His life so that we might be made clean in Him. He died on the cross as a substitute for our sin and rose again from the grave so that those who repent and believe might be justified before God.
Lord’s Supper
We Remember the Lord’s Supper
When I Survey The Wondrous Cross
When I survey The wondrous cross On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride
Forbid it Lord that I should boast Save in the death of Christ my God
All the vain things That charm me most I sacrifice them to His Blood

Glorious Day
I was buried beneath my shame
Who could carry that kind of weight
It was my tomb 'til I met You
I was breathing but not alive
All my failures I tried to hide
It was my tomb 'til I met You
'Cause when You called my name and I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness into Your glorious day
You called my name and I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness into Your glorious day
Now Your mercy has saved my soul
Now Your freedom is all that I know
The old made new Jesus when I met You
'Cause when You called my name and I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness into Your glorious day
You called my name and I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness into Your glorious day
I needed rescue my sin was heavy
But chains break at the weight of Your glory
I needed shelter I was an orphan
Now You call me a citizen of Heaven
When I was broken You were my healing
Now Your love is the air that I'm breathing
I have a future my eyes are open
'Cause when You called my name and I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness into Your glorious day
You called my name and I ran out of that grave
Out of the darkness into Your glorious day
