Overview We characterized the physical hydrogeology at the Stranahan Arboretum. Purpose: To locate the flow of groundwater To find how contamination impacts the surface and how quickly it can be transported
Step #1: Site Assessment Observed the “lay of the land” Located hydraulic features (ponds, streams, ditches, storm drains, etc.) Located contaminant sources (point and non-point sources) Drew general conclusions
Our Site Assessment Possible Sources of Contamination: Receptors: Roads (oil, heavy metals, storm sewers) Nearby homes (septic tanks, pesticides, roofs, cleaning products, improper disposal and storage of oil and gasoline) Abandoned 55-gallon drums (Benzene and Paraxylene) Receptors: Ground water Domestic wells, pond, wet lands Surface water Pond, wet lands, streams
