SOME THINGS TO REMEMBER Class is the type of combustible hazard in the area or location. Class I is vapors, gases and liquids. Class II is dusts including wood and metal. Class III is flyings and Fibers. Division is based on the presence of the combustible hazard. Division 1 means the hazard is present at all times. Division 2 means the hazards is not normally present but may become present under certain cricumstances. Groups are the break down of specific hazards by chemical, wood or type for better classification. For example Group A of Class I is Acetylene. Group E of Class II is metal dusts. The groups are found in 500.6 Material Groups Intrinsically Safe Systems is a system in which any spark or thermal effect is incapable of causing ignition of a mixture of flammable or combustible material in air under prescribed test conditions. SOME THINGS TO REMEMBER Copyright 2008 Ted "Smitty" Smith

ZONE O, 1 and 2 Areas (Gases and VAPORS) ARTICLE 505 ZONES 0,1 and 2 are an alternate method of classifying areas and is used for only Class I areas. They are used somewhat like the Divisions but with different break downs. ZONE 0 where ignitable flammable gases or vapors are present continuously or for long periods of time ZONE 1 where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors may exist frequently under normal conditions or because of repair and maintenance or equipment breakdown or next to a Zone 0 area where gases could travel to the area. Zone 2 where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors are not likely to occur in normal conditions and if they do occur will be present for only a short period of time. ZONE O, 1 and 2 Areas (Gases and VAPORS) ARTICLE 505 Copyright 2008 Ted "Smitty" Smith

ZONE 20, 21 and 22 Areas (DUST AND FIBERS) ARTICLE 506 ZONES 20,21,and 22 are an alternate method of classifying areas and is used for only Class II and Class III areas. They are used somewhat like the Divisions but with different break downs. ZONE 20 where ignitable flammable dusts or fibers are present continuously or for long periods of time ZONE 21 where ignitable concentrations of flammable dusts or fibers may exist frequently under normal conditions or because of repair and maintenance or equipment breakdown or next to a Zone 0 area where gases could travel to the area. Zone 22 where ignitable concentrations of flammable dusts or fibers are not likely to occur in normal conditions and if they do occur will be present for only a short period of time.
