The success rate of teaching methods A leading university created a paper that explained how effective they thought different teaching methods were. The following is what they found. Lots of Evidence of Impact (Pedagogical) Content Knowledge -Having a deep understanding of the subject you teach Quality of Instruction -Effective questioning and use of assessment -Reviewing previous learning

Classroom Climate -Covers quality of instruction -Create a classroom that is constantly demanding more while still respecting students’ self worth Classroom Management -A teacher’s ability to make efficient use of lesson time -Coordinating classroom resources and space -Managing students’ behaviour with clear rules that are consistently enforced

Thunk What do you think you do well to help learning at Oakfield? What do you think you can improve to help learning at Oakfield?

What teachers do effectively You can walk straight into most lessons and at any point know what’s happening The learning environment in most classrooms was quite calm and poor behaviour was dealt with quickly and effectively Everybody was involved in the learning in some way No one seemed affected by our presence while doing ‘Learning Walks’ Teachers and pupils used previous work to improve future and present work Lots of communication between teachers and students Lots of resources Learners tend to understand the work that is being set for them Pupils get to be with their friends: If you feel comfortable in the learning environment you will learn better

What isn’t going as well as it could Sometimes students aren’t challenged to their full ability Sometimes teachers pick on students to answer It’s the same learning environment Sometimes work does not suit all ranges of ability

What teachers could improve A wider range of work A wider range of work/activities for those who maybe struggle to do some of the work in their set; whereas they may not struggle with the subject, it could be helpful to have a few different activities with different levels of difficulty. Choice, Choice and more Choice!!!! Different Environment Possibly once a week, or a few times a month, take students out of their regular learning environment, (outdoor classroom, field, enrichment centre) to ‘wake them up’. If you’re stuck in the same place repeatedly you’re brain might begin to ‘turn off’ when you visit that classroom. Learning in a different environment every now and then might help wake them up and encourage them to work harder.

Sometimes students are chosen when they don’t have their hand up When students are chosen and they don’t have their hand up, this can actually be quite detrimental to their learning, especially if it causes them anxiety. Sometimes, you may think you know whether a student is outgoing or not, but we have faces we hide behind and some students may have hidden anxiety.

Take a takeaway Write down 3 things that went well throughout the year, and what could be developed for the next year. Ask pupils questions about their opinion of them being challenged by work and how effective do they think that they learnt, then next year after a couple of lessons ask them the same questions and see if they changed their mind. Find work that can encourage a student to be intrinsically motivated while still challenging them. Extrinsic motivation: externally sourced Intrinsically motivated: internal desire to work hard

What could be developed What Went Well What could be developed
