NHS Interest Meeting October 18th and 19th, 2018

What is NHS? National Honor Society is one of the country’s oldest high school organizations meant to recognize students who have superior grades, strong leadership skills, a dedication to serving others, and most importantly, are the epitome of the good character expected of our most outstanding students. NHS works with various organizations to better our community. Members are required to attend monthly meetings, pay yearly dues ($25 for juniors and $45 for seniors), attend all NHS sponsored events (1 per quarter), and complete at least 10 hours of community service per year 2 of which must be from CORE tutoring or HW Club.

Application requirements Leadership: Activities & leadership roles section covers this score. Did you coach a youth team? Did you lead a group at your church? Were you a captain of a sports team? Committee chair of something? THINK! There are lots of ways to be a leader. Service: If you cannot get a signature, an email or letter from the sponsor/supervisor is acceptable Certificates/awards are also acceptable, but please submit copies Character: Essay(s) First essay is required. Second essay is optional; it can help or hurt your score. PROOFREAD Scholarship: A copy of your year end 2017-2018 report card must be attached to your application. You can access and print this in StudentVue under the documents tab.

Service rubric Service Max score (4 pts): Student demonstrates consistent and sustained outstanding service and involvement to better or improve school and our community. A total of 50 or more hours of service has been rendered. 3 points: Student demonstrates service and involvement to better or improve school and our community on an ongoing basis. A total of 35 -49 hours of service has been rendered. 2 points: Student demonstration of service and involvement is inconsistent. More one-time events than dedicated involvement. A total of 25 -34 hours of service has been rendered. 1 point: How activities impacts school or community is unclear. Or activities are listed but verification signatures are missing. A total of 0 -24 hours of service has been rendered.

Leadership rubric Leadership   Student may be awarded points based on the significance of activity as well as the number of activities.     4 points: Student shows strong, effective leadership in formal and informal situations. S/he takes initiative in setting, and asserting direction toward goals. S/he is seen as a positive leader in classroom. S/he is involved in 6 or more activities through her/his high school years. 3 points: Student shows effective leadership in formal situations. S/he holds/has held office in a number of organizations, and has moved the organization forward with her/his role. S/he is involved in at least 4 or more activities through her/his high school years. 2 points: Student shows or has shown tentative leadership activity. S/he may hold/has held office or displays leadership informally in class and other situations. S/he is involved in at least 2 or more activities through her/his high school years. 1 point: How the student was a leader is unclear. Little evidence of leadership.

Character rubric Character 4 points: Student shows strong evidence of exemplifying all qualities of character. Has had no visits to ISR, no discipline referrals, few or no tardies, and is never rude or disrespectful to staff. 3 points: Student shows good evidence of exemplifying most of the qualities of character. Has had no visits to ISR, no discipline referrals, few or no tardies, and is never rude or disrespectful to staff. 2 points: Student shows moderate evidence of exemplifying most of the qualities of character. Has had one visit to ISR or one minor discipline referral. Has some absences. 1 point: Student has had discipline problems and/or referrals, has been rude, disrespectful to staff, has excessive tardies, or has more than one visit to ISR. Has excessive absences.

General notes Include copies of awards/certificates, not originals If signatures cannot be obtained, emails or letter from sponsor are fine Any unpaid work is volunteer work; please put any paid work (part time job, babysitting, etc.) under the work experience section You must include your year end report card from 2017-2018 SY Be sure to sign part IV, the Honor Code, of the application; if you do not sign this section or if you are not honest on any part of your application, you will not be admitted to NHS and will not be allowed to reapply the following year

FINAL DEADLINE NHS Applications are due to the Counseling Office by 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31st. No late applications will be considered. No exceptions!

Important dates Wednesday, October 31, BY 4:15 p.m.: Completed printed application due.  ALL STUDENTS WHO WISH TO BE CONSIDERED FOR SELECTION MUST SUBMIT THEIR APPLICATION BY THIS DATE. November 1-6: NHS Sponsor reviews applications to ensure no missing materials. Students who are missing any parts of their submitted application (i.e. signatures, essay, etc.) are notified via email by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 6th. Tuesday, October 6: Students notified via email if their application is deficient due to missing material. Friday, November 9, BY 4:15 p.m.: Any missing materials due. ANY MATERIALS NOT SUBMITTED BY THIS DATE WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED AND MAY IMPACT YOUR APPLICATION STATUS AND POTENTIAL ADMISSION. Monday, November 26: Students who have been accepted into NHS are notified by mail (letters mailed home 11/26). Tuesday, December 4, 7:00 p.m.: National Honor Society Induction Ceremony held at PFHS Auditorium. Light refreshments and celebration held immediately following ceremony in PFHS Library.
