Nucleic and Amino Acids 7th Grade Life Science

Nucleic Acids are building blocks of living organisms Nucleic acids are made from nucleotides Adenine Thymine Cytosine Guanine Uracil

Nucleotides Nucleotides are made of a 5-Carbon sugar, a nitrogen base, and a phosphate (PO4)

Types of Nucleic Acids RNA DNA

DNA structure DNA holds genetic information in cells. DNA is a long chain of nitrogen base pairs that form a double helix. The nucleotides that pair to make a base in DNA is: Adenine and Thymine and Cytosine and Guanine.

Amino Acids Amino acids are used in every cell to build proteins necessary to survive.

Amino Acids - bonding together in long chains to form protein Teacher Note: Use Mardi Gras beads to model the long chains.

Proteins Proteins are made from amino acids. Proteins are used to build simple structures like cell membranes to complex structures like muscles. Proteins are made from amino acids.

Enzymes Enzymes (which are made from proteins) act as catalysts which help complex reactions and changes to happen. They are very helpful in breaking down substances in digestion.
