Work of the Task Force on future census Agenda point 5 DSS Meeting 15 - 17 September 2015

Content Update on the activities of the Task Force on future EU censuses Summary of the progress made Outline of the timetable for future work on both the 2021 census data collection and the post-2021 census strategy. Information on the current technical proposals for a limited set of 2021 census data geo-referenced to a 1km² grid

The task force 17 NSIs Non-participants can follow via the dedicated CIRCABC interest group So far mostly 2021 round (post 2021 discussions will re-start next week) Simplification and reduction to about 50%-60% of tables. New proposal according to DSS priorities Geo-referenced table 2 tables on migration – more detail Support through grants (2015-2016-2017) Use of admin data Geo-referencing Specific country issues Both via special Census Grants and ESS.ADAMIN project

the 2011 census Defining the outputs of the 2021 EU census data collection the census topic definitions and classifications programme of cross-tabulations Reduction to 50%-60% of 2011 programme in terms of table number (203  110) Simplification: breakdowns, optional items, no secondary data; removal of doubtful or duplicate tables; minimisation of effort for topics of diminishing relevance 2 migration related tables expanded 1 km² grid data (see next slide) Keeping the geo-detail Slight reduction in dimensionality metadata collection

the 2011 census Geo-referenced (1 km² grid data) Source: DSS priority, INSPIRE topics where there are policy needs topics that may present technical problems avoided 13 numbers: Total population Age (under 15, 15-64, 65 and over) Sex (males, females) Employed persons Place of Birth (reporting country, another EU country, outside EU) Usual residence 12 months before (same, within reporting country, outside of the reporting country) options for a legal framework for data collection particular confidentiality issue (see next slide)
