NEW DEAL OR NO DEAL?

Down to Business Essential Question What programs did FDR create to provide direct relief during the Depression? Was it successful?

Why do I care, Miss McCormack? Franklin Delano Roosevelt took on the heroic task of leading a nation that was in the pits of despair. His progressive and bold moves toward financial health won him a great deal of America’s respect as a leader. However, his actions opened a new set of expectations in addition to a standard of greater spending from our government. To this day Americans debate the benefits and drawbacks of these forms of governmental action.

New Deal 2 goals 3 objectives relieve as much human suffering in shortest time possible try to correct conditions that brought about the suffering 3 objectives relief for the needy economic recovery financial reform

First 100 Days of FDR Congress passed 15+ pieces of legislation March 1933: (8 day) BANK HOLIDAY! declared by executive order intended to stop runs on the banks

Same Objectives(relief, recovery, reform) Second New Deal 1935-36 3 major goals improve use of national resources security for the elderly, unemployed & ill national welfare program (WPA) Same Objectives(relief, recovery, reform)

Reaction Liberal Conservative did not go far enough to help the “forgotten man” & “fix” society did not end the depression large gap between rich and poor remained too much government spending “created a welfare state” interference with free enterprise Believed court packing scheme destroyed checks and balances

Lasting Impacts expanded power of the federal government millions of dollars into the economy created jobs regulated supply & demand settled labor disputes loans available to farmer in agricultural/rural areas
