Diction An author's choice of words. Since words have specific meanings, and since one's choice of words can affect feelings, a writer's choice of words can have great impact in a literary work. The writer, therefore, must choose his words carefully.

Diction has to do with the author’s word choice. What words are he/she choosing to get his/her point across? Denotation: This is the LITERAL meaning of a word. Dictionary definition Connotation: Ideas or feelings that a word creates inside the reader. Levels of Diction: Formal Informal Slang/Colloquial HOW DOES DICTION AFFECT TONE?
