Medical Scholars Program in Child and Adolescent Health (also known as the MSSP) University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and the Department of Pediatrics

A Brief History of the MSSP Call from the Dean’s office in 2004 for “specialized learning tracks” Child and Adolescent Health Scholars Program Approved for 05-06 Dr.Connie McAneney directed program 2005-2007 Dr. Corinne Lehmann directs program 2007-current Dr. Patty Fulkerson directs research component 2015

Why this Program? Extra clinical opportunities to explore pediatrics Explore research in pediatrics (good for learning and residency applications) Learn leadership skills Connect with advocacy and volunteerism Connect with faculty who can help guide your career decision making Designation at graduation and in Deans letter comments for residency application

Student Requirements to be a Candidate Scholar Shadowing: 6 in first year and 6 in second year- half day (4) hour sessions typically 12 total in years 1 and 2 8/12 should be in different areas Try for general areas first year, specialty areas in year 2 Lunch Lectures/Meetings/Peds Club Attendance: 75% recorded attendance in years 1 and 2 Volunteer/Advocacy: 40+ hours total years 1 and 2

Student Requirements to be a Candidate Scholar Leadership: Elected official or UCCOM committee participant for 1 year Research: 8 weeks full time between years 1 and 2 in pediatrics and present research in public forum Fourth Year Elective or Acting Internship at CCHMC- 2 or 4 weeks in length

Summer Research- Scholars Program Students can apply for any program at CCHMC Must give evidence is scholarly activity that uses scientific principals of research Research can be basic science “bench,” translational, clinical, medical education, health outcomes policies, etc. We have had students complete international research projects Many students choose projects already in progress with a mentor Few students create their own project

More Summer Research Details Students doing research outside of CCHMC must have approval of the scholars program first All students submit an application describing their proposed summer project Dr. Patty Fulkerson is Director of Medical Student Research for Department of Pediatrics

Summer Research Funding and Applications We will support some spots for stipend ($2500) support to student (10 available) if research done at CCHMC Students also encouraged to apply external stipend/scholarship (such as MSSRP, National Neurology scholarship, etc) even if doing research at CCHMC Competitive application for our limited stipends would take place early 2017

Summer Research Scholarship Requirement At UCCOM Student Research and Service Symposium (posters) –usually in fall At UC Research Week- usually in May At a local, regional, or national meeting (speaker or poster) As an author on a published paper

Volunteer/Advocacy Thoughts Doc Talks Program/CCHMC Residency Program (started 2015) Healthy Me Program started 2013-14 Multiple topics to all age school students in Cincinnati Area Volunteer at Cincinnati Walks for Kids St. Baldricks Event Med Mentors As long as it helps kids, it works!

Graduates of the Program 47% of 68 total students entered in pediatric related residencies (UCCOM/national student average ~11%). Pediatric residencies: CCHMC, Pittsburgh, Michigan, UAB, Northwestern, Cleveland, Kansas City, Phoenix, Columbus, Johns Hopkins, Indiana, Vermont Publications: Molecular Genetics and Metabolism, J Peds GI and Nutrition- just to name a few Presentations: AAP, CGEA/AAMC, COMSEP, International AIDS conference, and more

Other Student Highlights First author publication in Journal of Pediatrics Platform presentation at national AAP conference Orlando FL 2013 Platform presentation at International AIDS conference, Vienna Austria 2010 2 student led presentations on Scholars Progams at national meetings Poster presentation at Regional Global Health Conference, Cincinnati AMWA Regional Chairperson

Application and Acceptance Process Selection process: applications due October 1, then interview with pediatric faculty member Acceptance notifications sent out early November Student Candidates must keep own track progress in program Will need to submit documentation to scholars program on regular basis though UC’s Eportfolio Applications for second year students selected on case by case basis if they can document they have met program requirements Student Candidates must remain in good academic standing
