IPTV & Content Delivery in ETSI Document No: GSC17-PLEN-09r1 Source: ETSI Contact: Chantal Bonardi Sources: Luca Pesando (Telecom Italia), Sonia Compans & Chantal Bonardi (ETSI Secretariat) GSC Session: PLEN Agenda Item: 6.8 IPTV & Content Delivery in ETSI Presenter: Chantal Bonardi ETSI Secretariat Technical Officer
Introduction After TISPAN and MCD closure, EP E2NA and TC NTECH took over the responsibility for the work on Content Distribution Networks (CDN). ETSI via a specific agreement signed with DVB Project publishes DVB deliverables following approval by JTC Broadcast The goal of the DVB IPTV deliverables is to specify technologies on the interface between a managed IP network and retail receivers, enabling the end user to buy a DVB-IPTV receiver in any shop, take it home, connect it to a broadband network, choose and consume DVB services available over the IP network. DVB’s interactive middleware specifications, DVB-MHP and GEM, also include IPTV profiles.
Current activities – E2NA/NTECH Multi-screen convergence service Interoperable and exchangeable CA-DRM Content Distribution Network (CDN) architecture published protocol specification: ongoing CDN-I requirements and architecture published
Strategic directions – E2NA/NTECH CDN migration to Information centric networks
Challenges – E2NA/NTECH The changing business model from traditional broadcast to internet/IPTV based distribution The income for the content generators to be secured also in the future Gathering inputs from all parties involved in the value chain
Next steps & actions – E2NA/NTECH Finish the protocols for the CDN Study the migration of CDN to information centric networks CDN virtualization (in coop with the ISG NFV) CDN as a use case for Autonomic Management (GANA instantiation on the ETSI CDN Architecture)
Recent and current activities on IPTV – JTC Broadcast Recent approval of DVB IPTV scrambler specification (TS 103 127) This document specifies scrambling algorithms for IPTV services using MPEG2 transport streams Current work on update of DVB IPTV specification (TS 102 034) To provide a new functionality like in-home networking, fast channel change or system renewability messages (SRM) Current work on update of Carriage and signalling of hybrid Broadcast/Broadband specification (TS 102 809) To implement the necessary changes to align the document with the last version of TS 102 034
IPTV Next steps & actions – JTC Broadcast Review of all DVB IPTV standards and revisions where appropriate, for instance to adapt IPTV (currently supporting IPv4 only) to IPv6. DVB studies on: MPEG-DASH HEVC and UHDTV (from ITU-R) support in Broadcast Companion Screen for GEM platform CI Plus CAM (broadband and MP4 services, CAM resident applications) 3D TV enhancement through HEVC and UHDTV HTML5 for GEM Platform
