What is FERPA and for what purpose does it exist? The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as Amended (FERPA) is a federal law. The purpose of this law is to afford students certain rights pertaining to their educational records. FERPA applies to all students currently attending Texas Southmost College, or who have attended Texas Southmost College in the past.             The purpose The evaluation package will be used for all professional instructional personnel employed at TSC. To maintain high quality instruction at Texas Southmost College (TSC) To enhance student success, faculty development, and continued quality service to the institution and the community The complete Evaluation package will be sent to the instructor by the end of fifth week of the spring semester.

The Instructor Evaluation package             The Instructor Evaluation package The Full-Time Instructor Appraisal package consists of the following items: Performance Conference Instructional Observation Faculty Responsibilities Conference Final Conference The Part-Time (Adjunct) Instructor Appraisal package consists of the following items: Instructional Observation Faculty Responsibilities Conference Final Conference The complete Evaluation package will be sent to the instructor by the end of fifth week of the spring semester.

Administration of the Package             Administration of the Package The Evaluation Package will be used to evaluate all adjunct and dual credit enrollment instructors. One Evaluation Package is to be completed each year. All levels of instructional administration reserve the right to evaluate an instructor’s performance as deemed appropriate. All evaluation records become the property of TSC and will be filed in the official personnel file. The complete Evaluation package will be sent to the instructor by the end of fifth week of the spring semester.

Evaluation Process Instructional Observation Evaluation:             Evaluation Process Instructional Observation Evaluation: At least one Instructional Observation must be conducted per rating period. The evaluator may choose to conduct more than one Instructional Observation, if additional observations are needed to provide a fair and objective evaluation of the instructor’s performance. The observation can occur during any week of the course/semester prior to the Evaluator- Instructor Final Evaluation Conference. The evaluator will become aware of the course objectives through the instructor’s syllabus document and/or in consultation with the instructor before the visit. The evaluator will usually be present at the beginning of the class. The complete Evaluation package will be sent to the instructor by the end of fifth week of the spring semester.

Evaluation Process Final Conference:             Evaluation Process Final Conference: The deadline for the completion of all evaluation instruments is at least one week prior to the end of the course/semester. The evaluator will initiate the conference. The evaluator will provide the instructor with a copy of the complete Evaluation Package. The complete Evaluation Package will be sent to the instructor. (TBD) The complete Evaluation package will be sent to the instructor by the end of fifth week of the spring semester.

Instructional Observation Standards             Instructional Observation Standards Class Structure: Class structure promotes student learning outcomes and learning expectations. A brief review of concepts from the previous class period A brief overview of the major concepts of each new class A summary of the main points covered during the class Methods: Instructors use a variety of effective teaching methods; clear communication is the basis of all of them. Providing handouts Writing legibly on the board Appropriately delivered time-efficient lectures Other non‐lecture learning activities Innovative teaching strategies Class discussion The use of technology effectively Using electronic resources, videos, audio‐visual materials, etc.

Instructional Observation Standards             Instructional Observation Standards Teacher‐Student Interaction: Faculty members at TSC often teach wide ranging numbers of students per semester. Establishing a close relationship with each student may not be possible. Calling students by name as early as possible in the semester Making eye contact Validation of student ideas, suggestions, and discussion Involve students in class discussions and other activities to ensure an equal opportunity to contribute Promote a welcoming learning environment since it is integral in effective instructional practices Content: The success of the classroom experience hinges on content. Content needs to connect to student and departmental learning outcomes/objectives. These objectives include, but are not limited to: Critical thinking skills, communication skills, empirical skills, quantitative skills, teamwork, social responsibility, and personal responsibility Mastery of the subject taught, course learning outcomes and objectives Organizational skills Communication of knowledge & Effective explanations The complete Evaluation package will be sent to the instructor by the end of fifth week of the spring semester.
