The Study of Man (Anthropology)

What is man? The very height of God’s creation Subject of God’s care Genesis 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. Subject of God’s care Psalm 8:4 What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him.

Man – the tripartite being Genesis 2:7 The Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground (body) and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (spirit), and the man became a living being (soul). 1 Thessalonians 5:23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Body God made our body wonderfully complex Psalm 139:14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. God pronounced a curse because of sin Genesis 3:19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return. God desires for us to yield our body to the Lord Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship. Our body gives us “world-consciousness” through our five senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste.

The Soul The soul is the “self-conscious” part of man, it is man’s personality. It gives us the ability to reason and think (mind) and to feel (emotion) and to exercise our will. The mind needs to be renewed. Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind……. God gives us emotion so that we can express ourselves. Psalm 42:1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you O God. Our will needs to be aligned with God’s will. Luke 22:42 (Example of Jesus) Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will but yours be done.

The Spirit The spirit is the “god-conscious” part of man. Hebrews 8:10 Our conscience urges us to keep God’s standard Hebrews 8:10 …. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God and they will be my people. Man communicates to God through his spirit. John 4:24 God is spirit and his worshippers must worship in spirit and in truth.
