Outline. Introduction. Circuit Switching. -Advantage and disadvantage of circuit switching. - Some service product by circuit switching. Packet switching. -Datagram packet switching. - Virtual circuit packet switching. - Advantage and disadvantage of packet switching. Circuit switching VS Packet switching.

Introduction. The communication system based on the idea of providing a media to connect transmitter and Receiver, that for voice and data communications. For any type of media network must be provide a connection between different users and that achieve by switching.

Classification of Networks

Circuit Switching. Circuit switching is the transmission technology that has been used since the first communication networks in the nineteenth century. In circuit switching, a caller must first establish a connection channel to a Receveir.

Data flow over circuit switching.

The path is sequence of links located between nodes called switches. The path taken by data between its source and destination is determined by the circuit on which is flowing. The circuit does not change during the lifetime of connection. The circuit is terminated when the connection is closed.

Advantage of circuit switching. Fixed delay. Guaranteed continues delivery.

Some service product by circuit switching. Call redirect. Reverse charging. Incoming calls only. Outgoing calls only. Connect when free.

Disadvantage of circuit switching. In circuit switching, Resources remain allocated during a full length of communication, even if no data flowing in the circuit. The sender and Receiver must use the same protocol to do the connection between them. If the Receiver device are busy, the sender must waiting until the receiver is finish.

Packet switching. Packet switching is more recent technology than circuit switching which addresses a disadvantage of circuit switching. Packet switching introduces the idea of cutting data on flow into packets which are transmitted over network without any recourses being allocated.

Types of Packet switching.

Data flow over datagram packet switching.

Forwarding-tables

Datagram packet switching. Every packet contains a complete destination address. Switch contains a forwarding table (routing table) Host can send at any time in contrast to connection oriented networks. … now way to know, if the network is capable to deliver the packet – or if the host is up forwarding - independent of previous packets two successive packets may follow different paths (due to changes in the forwarding table)

Disadvantage of datagram packet switching. No time guarantee for delivery. No guarantee of delivery in sequence. No guarantee of delivery at all. No guarantee of data integrity.

Virtual circuit packet switching. Communication over VC consist of three phase: 1)Circuit establishment. 2)Data transfer. 3)Circuit terminating.

Flow data over Virtual circuit packet switching.

Advantage of Packet switching : 1)Efficient for bursty data. 2) The sender and receiver device not must use the same protocol to connect together. 3)No channel allocated to send the data. Disadvantage of Packet switching : 1) Variable delays. 2) Difficult to provide QoS.
