Skills Week – Staycation Summer Skills Week The summer is here! ‘The Staycation’ Skills Using numbers in geography Measuring distances Using direction 6-figure grid references

Skills Week – Staycation Summer Skills Week The Staycation You have £2,000 to spend on a week’s family holiday (7 nights) for 2 adults and 2 children.

Skills Week – Staycation Summer Skills Week DECISION NUMBER 1: How far will you travel and what mode of transport will you use? Destination 1 – 250 miles away. Fuel costs are 15p/mile. Average speed = 60mph Train tickets are £80 return each for adults and £35 each for children. Destination 2 – 100 miles away. Train tickets are £50 return each for adults and £20 each for children. Work out the time it would take to travel to each place by car. Calculate all costs. Decide on a destination and work out how much you have left to spend. Come and collect a map of your chosen destination.

Skills Week – Staycation Summer Skills Week 250 / 60 = 4.16 hours (4 hours and 9.6 mins 250 x 0.15p = £37.50 Both ways. £37.50 x 2 = £75 2 x 80 = £160 2 x 35 = £70 £160 + £70 = £230 100 / 60 = 1.67 hours (1 hour and 40.2 mins 100 x 0.15p = £15 Both ways. £15 x 2 = £30 2 x 50 = £100 2 x 20 = £40 £100 + £40 = £140

Skills Week – Staycation Summer Skills Week Now you know where you’re going, let’s make some more decisions. DECISION NUMBER 2: Where will you stay? (Prices of all rooms are to sleep two people) Hotel A - £120/night for each room Hotel B - £100/night for each room Hotel C - £70/night for each room. Calculate all costs and choose a hotel. Give the 6 figure grid reference for the car park. Measure the distance from your hotel to the beach (along the roads). Measure the distance from your hotel to the nearest car park (along the roads). Give the 6 figure grid reference for the hotel. Write directions from the car park to the hotel.

Skills Week – Staycation Summer Skills Week Destination 1 – answers £120 x 2= £240 £240 x 7 = £1680 5 m 25 m 022,485 018, 488 £100 x 2= £200 £200 x 7 = £1400 75m 50m 018, 474 025, 473 £70 x 2= £140 £140 x 7 = £980 210m 50m 009, 473 012, 478

Skills Week – Staycation Summer Skills Week Destination 2 – answers £120 x 2= £240 £240 x 7 = £1680 10 m 5 m 014, 484 016, 487 £100 x 2= £200 £200 x 7 = £1400 110m 110m 019, 469 010, 466 £70 x 2= £140 £140 x 7 = £980 200m 75m 024, 456 028, 458

Skills Week – Staycation Summer Skills Week What will we do whilst we’re there? DECISION NUMBER 3: What to do? How much money have you got left? You can now plan a range of activities to entertain your family. You are allowed to add activities if the prices are realistic! At this point you can also switch to staying in a caravan to free up more money for activities. If you do this, you need to put your caravan site onto the map!

Skills Week – Staycation Summer Skills Week Now for the fun stuff! IF YOU HAVE ANY TIME LEFT, CHOOSE YOUR OWN ACTIVITY…. Create a unique invitation for your family. Tell them how much this trip will cost them and what you want to do. Design a poster to advertise your holiday to other people. Make a puzzle book with geography puzzles for the journey. Plot your activities on the map and write directions. Devise a game to play with your family on the journey.
