Chapter 12 The Behavior of Gases

12-1 The Properties of Gases Recall principles of the kinetic theory. The large distance between particles allows them to be compressed. Gases can be used to absorb a considerable amount of energy. Ex: air bags

Four variables can describe a gas: Pressure Volume Temperature Moles

Section 12-2 Factors affecting Gas Pressure Amount of Gas -More gas=more collisions=more pressure Double the gas =????? the pressure. Double!! Aerosol cans rely on high pressure in the can and low outside.

Volume You can decrease the volume and that will increase the pressure. OR if you increase the volume the pressure will decrease.

Temperature Raising the temperature of an enclosed gas raises the pressure. This is due to the increased speed of the particles.
