Opening Pass out informational text “Law/Importance of Obeying the Law” Write your proper heading on the article Name Date (12/19/12) ELA 7-____ Circle the title of the article and write the purpose for reading Purpose for reading: Why should we obey laws? Read and mark the text using your thinking notes.

7th grade writing prompt All people are expected to obey laws at home, school, and in your community. Think of a specific law that you are expected to follow. Write a multi-paragraph essay explaining how the law affects you, and why you think it is fair or unfair. Use reasons and examples from the text and the law to support your choice.

Prewriting Steps (10 minutes) On a sheet of loose leaf paper, create a list of 5-10 laws that you are expected to follow at school, home, and in your community. Using a T-chart, divide your list into laws that you think are fair (pro) and not fair (con). Pick three laws that you are most familiar with and that you know the most about. Decide on and circle the law that you are most familiar with and can really explain to someone.

Drafting Steps State your claim. Ex. Students are not allowed to bring weapons to any Cobb County School. This is a law that applies to every student enrolled within Cobb County. As a student, I think that this law is fair because _______________. Write your introduction. Make sure you include your claim. Using your claim, write the remainder of your multi-paragraph essay. Remember you are explaining how the law affects you, and why you think it is fair or unfair. Use reasons and examples from the text and the law to support your claim.

December 20, 2012 Once you have written your multiple paragraph essay, you are ready to complete the following steps: Sign out a laptop.
