What is happening in the picture? This is a drawing of an event in 1773 which became known as the Boston Tea Party.

After the Boston Tea Party, the British responded by closing the port of Boston and banning public meetings, which angered the Americans. In September 1774 representatives from all over the 13 colonies met in Philadelphia to decide what to do. This was known as the ‘first congress’, and it was decided to rebel against Britain. This led to the War of Independence, which was fought for five brutal years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cT_Z0KGhP8 The Boston Tea Party 16th December 1773 led to the American War of Independence and the eventual loss of America as a colony of the British Empire. This is because there was an increase in taxes in the colony as the British government tried to raise money to defend the thirteen colonies against French invasion. The colonists felt this was unfair as they had no representation in parliament. This lack of representation could link to the rights of the colonists. This meant that the American colonists wanted the rights of all English men. The English however saw the colonies as being their for the benefit of the Crown and Parliament and used how they saw fit.
