THE WORLD PROGRAMME FOR THE CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE 2010 (WCA 2010) FAO Statistics Division June 2005

Outline of agricultural census/survey programme Themes The agricultural census component consists of the two red sectors in the centre. The diagram shows items under selected headings or themes such as “land”, “irrigation”, etc., according to their suitability for inclusion in the agricultural census core module, in the agricultural census supplementary modules, or in the thematic agricultural surveys.

Modular Approach for WCA 2010 Agricultural census/survey programme consists of: Census of Agriculture: core census module (complete enumeration):16 data items census supplementary module(s) (sample enumeration): 12 themes with 87 data items Community level data: 32 data items Thematic agricultural surveys: in-depth surveys to be undertaken after the agricultural census, using the agricultural census as a frame. The agricultural census is to be conducted within the framework of the whole agricultural census/survey programme. The basic approach is to consider the total needs for agricultural data, and then decide whether each type of data is suitable for inclusion in the agricultural census or the thematic agricultural surveys. The distinction between census supplementary modules and thematic agricultural surveys may be blurred. The supplementary modules are carried out as part of the agricultural census operation and are concerned with structural data.

Additional Features Harmonized concepts and classifications Option for inclusion of aquaculture

THANK YOU FAO does not conduct agricultural censuses itself; it provides help for countries to undertake their own agricultural censuses. The agricultural census is not an FAO questionnaire sent to each country asking them to provide national data.
